Hike from the bay in the small fishermen's village of St. Michiel to the top of the St. Michiel's mountain (105 meters high) via another mountain, the Seru Blandan
Highlights of this trip:
We park the cars in the parking place behind the dive shop. From there we walk along the shore of the saliña (salt lake). Depending on the water level in the salt lake we might need to take a higher level path. We walk through an area with a lot of crabs and visit the remains of the indigo tank system. From there we start the climb of the Seru Blandan. To our right we have a view on the more modern part of St. Michiel's village. When we reach the top of the Seru Blandan we can see the top of the St. Michiel's mountain. After a rest we continue to this top where we have a nice view on the surrounding area. Then we descend via a long path this mountain and start the hike back to the parking lot.
Please bring good walking shoes and sufficient water for the trip. Along the shore of the saliña the underground can be muddy so keep this in mind when selecting your shoes.

Hike from the Caracasbay over the Caracasbay peninsula with a visit to several historical buildings in this area.
The hike starts at the parking place in front of the last restaurant at the Caracasbay. From there we walk towards the fort. We enter the fort and take a look at the old waterbuilding that was used as a watertank for the hospital that was here in the past.
We continue our hike towards the Quarantaine building and from there we walk over the peninsula to the foot of the Kabrietenberg (Mountain of the goats). We don't climb this mountain though, but turn right and walk around the Kabrietenberg through the beautiful nature back to the starting point.
Hike through Parke Sorsaka (Den Dunki) to the lagoon of Jan Thiel.
Highlights of this hike:
The cars are parked close to the parking lot of the pharmacy Sorsaka along the Caracasbaaiweg (Road to the Caracasbay); from there we walk to the entrance of Parke Sorsaka. Inside this park, close to the entrance is the large bridge that was part of the Swan park that was created here by the family Gorsira in the 19th century. Then we visit the large well. A nice example of the way water was made available in the past.
The hike continues through a forest-like area with impressive large trees to the Jan Thiel lagoon. From there the route is dependent on the condition and water level of the lagoon. We walk as much as possible over the dry area close to the border of the lagoon. There are two old dams in this area. Most of the time a large flock of flamingos can be found in the lagoon. Other water birds can also be seen in this area. We continue the hike along the lagoon and visit several salt pans in this area. During the dry period crystallized salt can be found in these pans. This gives a snow-like effect which is very special in our tropical climate.
Then we walk back to the cars more or less along the same route.

Hike from the parking place of Kokomo Beach at Vaersenbay to the area around Hofi Malpais.Attention: due to a lot of fallen trees the Hofi is no longer accessible; so it is no longer part of this hike.
We park the cars in the parking lot of Kokomo Beach. From there we cross the dry (most of the time) saliña (saltpan) on the same side of the road as the parking lot. We leave this saliña opposite the entrance to the former plantation Malpais. We cross the road and enter the plantation. We walk over an old dam and visit the two systems of indigo tanks. From there we follow the winding path to the Pos di Pia. This is a nice area with lots of large fallen trees. From there we walk over the dam where we have a nice view over "the lake that disappeared" (for a large part of the year completely dry) and visit the ruin of the old milk factory.
Hike from the Caracasbay to the top of the Kabrietenberg (78 meters high) which is the Dutch word for Mountain of the goats.
We continue our hike towards the Quarantaine building and from there we start going uphill to the top of the Kabrietenberg. There we enjoy the view, take a rest and then descend to go back to the starting point.
Especially on the Kabrietenberg the terrain can be rough and sharp so bring good shoes. Also bring sufficient water for the trip.
Hike from Jan Thiel bay to the entrance of the lagoon along the coast and then back via a different pathHighlights of this hike:
The hike starts at the barrier accross the dirt road close to the Chogogo resort at the Jan Thiel bay. The car can be parked along the road next to this resort. The first part of the hike is close to the sea shore. There we find nice mangroves; we follow a path that leads us uphill where we continue the hike is on top of the cliff. When we reach the area around the entrance of the lagun we go back down to sea level where we visit the old border wall, the remnants of the salt storage building, the old pier and the ruin of the lime kiln. After a rest with fruit under a nice Palu di sia we continue our hike more inland over a winding path with a divers vegetation along the path. There are Gumtrees, Brasilwood or Dyewood trees, Dividivi trees and some Kalbas trees. We cross a long and straight dirt maintenance road to continue in the direction of the lagoon. Then we walk along the shore of the lagoon. When we reach the first saltpan on this side of the lagoon we start the last part of the hike which brings us back to the parked cars.
